The pandemic has given us plenty of time to pause and re-think our relationships with the world around us. And for many, it has been a call to hark back to simpler times. This mindset has also trickled into our clothing choices, generated an aesthetic that is now referred to as cottagecore. "Cottagecore is more than just a fashion trend; it is a movement that embraces a way of life that is simple, sustainable and harmonious with nature," says stylist Disha Selarka, pointing to the growing popularity of sourdough baking, DIY crafting, sewing and gardening over the last year. From a fashion perspective, cottagecore is inspired by nature-based motifs, craft projects, sustainability, and light, summery colours, she explains.
Summery colours define this aesthetic, says Disha Selarka
Simple silhouettes: Dungarees and apron dresses are at the heart of this aesthetic. To soften their appeal, choose fabrics other than traditional denim such as linen, in earthy hues and pair them with light chiffon tops. Smocked frocks and milkmaid dresses are other top picks.
Colours and patterns: The gingham print, which is evocative of picnic blankets and lazy Sunday afternoons, works well with this aesthetic, as do pastels, especially in billowing Victorian-style dresses or blouses. Look for subtle accents such as balloon sleeves, frilly collars and ruffled skirts. For men, a palette comprising woody browns, dark greens and dark, earthy reds works well. Choose slightly relaxed fits for your bottoms, advises Selarka. Cotton and chiffon should be your go-to as opposed to luxe fabrics. Nature-inspired prints such as floral designs and old-fashioned sweetheart necklines, whether worn in the form of blouses or dresses work well with the cottagecore vibe.

The DIY touch: Handmade accents can elevate your cottagecore looks. Look for small crochet details, knitted accessories such as vests or berets. Men can throw on a light hand-knitted cardigan over an ensemble of linen trousers and a polo tee. If you're looking to add an Indian touch, layer a white self-embroidered salwar-kameez with a colourful embroidered waistcoat.
