Volunteers at a previous drive organised by GreenLine
Food wrappers, soft drink bottles, plastic bags, rubber slippers and half-molten idols are among the many familiar sights that greet us on a visit to the city's beaches, be it Juhu or Versova. We can always get caught up in the blame game of whose waste it is, or we can roll up our sleeves and get to work. That's what International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) Day - celebrated today - calls for. Established by the Ocean Conservancy organisation, the initiative mobilises people to remove trash from the world's beaches and waterways.
In Mumbai, the NGO GreenLine is answering the clarion call by conducting a clean-up drive at Dadar beach. Ashwini Jadhav, programme officer of Green Lifestyle Initiative campaign of the NGO, shares that volunteers will be provided with gloves and snacks. "The drive is aimed at bringing about behavioural change. It's not just about cleaning the waste, but about how we can curb the supply chain of waste generation," Jadhav points out.
