To break away from the monotony of churning out back-to-back Bollywood soundtracks and being shackled to a studio, film composers like Salim-Sulaiman, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, AR Rahman and Vishal-Shekhar, among others, explore different forms of music with live shows and collaborations for independent projects. The latest jugalbandi is Salim-Sulaiman's collaboration with the Rajasthani folk outfit, The Manganiyars. Though they have been touring the world for shows for a few months, an upcoming performance at The Quarter, Royal Opera House, will mark their first association in the city. The recital will feature brothers Salim and Sulaiman Merchant, and The Manganiyars comprising Sattar Khan, Habib Khan and Feroz Khan.

Salim says, "How I met The Manganiyars is a wonderful story. The singer in the group, Sattar Khan, had met me during the Indian Idol auditions. I was a judge on the panel and his performance and innocence stayed with me. Seven years later, I met him at a private concert in Udaipur, and he looked completely different. I recognised his voice and virtuosity. I decided to have him as part of our tour on that day."

For The Manganiyars, sharing the stage with the duo is an honour. "Performing with the maestros will be all the more special this time around, as it will be in their hometown," says Sattar Khan. The composer duo has come up with a special playlist for the recital. "We plan to feature The Manganiyars in a unique way. We will showcase a few qawwalis by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and folk songs from Rajasthan fused with contemporary Bollywood and some popular devotional tracks that we have composed for movies," says Salim.
The Manganiyars, on the other hand, are excited about the experimental performance, where they will also present traditional Sufi numbers fused with modern sounds. "Sharing the stage with Salim-Sulaiman has boosted Rajasthan's folk artistes. Besides performing across the world, we have also garnered a lot of attention from the media," admits Habib Khan.
