Electronic DJs and producers are becoming as ubiquitous in the Indian indie scene as the number of vada pav stalls at Mumbai's railway stations. So, it's always refreshing to come across a five-piece act that gets up on stage and thrashes out danceable alt-rock using moody vocals, guitars and drums. And what sets the F16s further apart from the pack is that they use The Strokes as a blueprint for their sound, which lends their music a flavour that audiences had stopped getting a taste of once The Supersonics - arguably one of the country's most promising indie outfits ever - disbanded in 2014.
"Josh [Fernandez, vocalist] spent some time in Dubai. And the influences that a person growing up in India would have are quite different from the bands that he used to listen to there. So, he brought The Strokes inspiration along when he came back to the country. And since it was a sound that we could emulate well, it remains as the fulcrum of the music we are making," says Abhinav Krishnaswamy, the Chennai-based band's guitarist.
That music will be on display in the city. The F16s will perform songs from their debut album, Triggerpunkte. But it's not that the gig will be completely shorn of electronic beats, since city-based master sampler Func will play a closing set. So, head to the venue if you want a taste of both worlds - straight-up alt-rock as well as DJ music.
