A watering hole in Andheri has been hosting weekly jazz nights every Tuesday for a while. But the band that will play there tonight doesn't quite fit into the genre's bracket. Instead, Smalltalk is an act that is more in the singer-songwriter mould, with the four-piece outfit relying on guitars, drums and bass for its melodies.
In fact, the two-year-old band is still in the process of finding its musical voice. Vocalist Samarth Bahl tells us, "We played our first gig at blueFROG in 2016 and we were still finding our sound at that point. And our sound is evolving even today, because we are all developing our skills individually. So, every time we approach songwriting there is always a new angle added to it. That's what develops the sound actually, and that's also why it's always evolving."
Bahl adds that the four members of Smalltalk - the others are bassist Yohann Coutinho, drummer Linford Owen and guitarist Siddharth Shankar - are ready with their debut EP called Tacit, which they will launch in March. But they will play a few tunes from it to test the waters at tonight's gig. "We will be playing a set with our own originals, and will also play a few covers from our influences," Bahl says, adding that the sort of music he is into is eclectic. "I've been listening to a lot of hip-hop lately, stuff like Kendrick Lamar," he says, citing a rather unusual artiste to appear on a mellifluous neo-soul singer's playlist.
