Although recently popularised by Deepika Padukone in the movie Padmaavat, ghoomar is a dance form that has been traditionally performed by women of the Bhil tribe of Rajasthan in order to worship goddess Saraswati. Its popularity grew during the Rajput reign and in 2013, it was ranked fourth in the list of popular dances around the world.
Starting this evening, the Women Chambers of Commerce is organising a workshop for women who wish to learn the dance form, which involves pirouetting while moving in and out of a circle. Since performers are required to be energetic, don't forget to carry a bottle of water and a towel along with your dancing shoes.
