Four kinds of craft beer to try at this Lower Parel brewery

The White Owl Brewery & Bistro has opened its taps with craft beer of four kinds. We went on a sipping spree and liked what showed up

Diablo, a red ale; Halcyon, a wheat beer

Beer lovers in the city rejoiced when The White Owl Brewery & Bistro opened last summer with hopes of tasting specially made beers. However, the wait to taste some was too long as the licences were not in place. Finally it was time to cheer again, as the brewery started selling four house-special brews by tap this month.

We started with Diablo (Rs 245 for 330 ml). This ale had a well-balanced roasted flavour and bitterness. This was followed by Halcyon (Rs 285), a wheat beer that had a beautiful colour and hidden sweet notes to played with our taste buds. This seemed at par with some of the commonly available wheat beers in the city, with a positive addition of good colour.

Our tipple experience went a notch higher with the next two orders. Shadow (Rs 325) an English porter had a heavier body (beer term for thickness) compared to the first two beers and the taste of the roast was stronger too. With subtle hints of chocolate merging with the solid roasted flavour, this beer will please those who love bitter beers.

The last beer, Torpedo (Rs 325) was quite the opposite; an ale with one of the best aromas as compared to any of the other beers in the city. Supported by a citrusy flavour, the aroma worked as a wonderful change of scene in our beer experience in the city.

We feel that White Owl's beers were worth the wait and hope that they add more options with time (despite not being very cheap when you add the taxes). Here's a toast!
