Desi Deli, known for its global food with local touch, will now be open to serve power packed breakfasts every weekend

Wahwah Brekky

The Desi Deli, which replaced an ATM on Chapel Street, has very little space but a vast menu of sumptuous food. Starting this Saturday, the Deli will also add breakfast fare to the menu, initially available only on weekends. "A lot of people told us we should do a breakfast menu. We thought that it was the most important meal of the day, so why not? We didn't want to serve options easily available elsewhere in the city, so, we have experimented with Southern American fare, and had trials with our friends, who appreciated it," shares Lolita, owner Desi Deli.

Power breaker
Unlike the rest of the menu, the breakfast section does not include fusion food. It mainly is an all-American breakfast. The menu skips pancakes and waffles that usually form a large part of the breakfast menus at most city eateries, and instead includes Brekky Dogs, egg options, artisanal sausages, praline bacon, shakes and smoothies. Here is our list of what you absolutely shouldn't miss when you drop by.

Chilled Chocolate

We started with a smoothie called The Cure All (Rs 160), which is essentially a spiced papaya smoothie; thick and delish. Even as someone who is not fond of the fruit, we enjoyed this one. If you like oats, you can also try the Kalimera (Rs 200) made from yoghurt, honey, nuts and oats or Good Morning (Rs 175), which is a classic banana and citrus smoothie.

Arepa (Rs 200), which is a vegetarian Venezuelan street food pick, comes packed with paneer salsa verde, sour cream and carrots. This gluten-free treat was impressive. We had to brace ourselves for what was coming next. The Wahwah Brekky (Rs 375) is the most outstanding combination of oats, garlic mushrooms, spinach, white sauce, scrambled eggs, artisanal sausage and gravy served with buttermilk biscuits. This was topped with Praline Bacon which was to die for. There is a vegetarian version that costs R225. Highly recommended. Buttermilk biscuits, which are popular in America and served at popular fast food outlets there, are difficult to find here.

The Chilled Chocolate (Rs 220) was described as a luxurious cold Belgian chocolate dip, served with seasonal fruits and an orange crisp. One bite of this heavenly dessert and you will understand that the term luxurious couldn't have been more justified!

On the go
The vegetarian and non-vegetarian versions of The Wahwah Brekky will also be available in takeaway glasses, and soon, you can start picking them on weekdays, when in a rush to get to work.
