It is available everywhere in the city, from street food joints to upscale restaurants. Here is a list of 10 delicious chaats you simply must have in Mumbai.



1. Bhelpuri: This is a savoury snack made with puffed rice, powdered spices, and vegetables like onions, tomatoes, and boiled potatoes. Tamarind chutney, peanuts, chopped coriander leaves, sev and green chutney are added from top to enhance the taste. This popular Mumbai street food is consumed using an edible papdi.

2. Panipuri: This common Indian street food is loved by people from all walks of life. A round hollow deep-fried crisp puri (balls) made from chickpea flour is filled with a Ragda (white or yellow peas) and sweet tamarind chutney. The puris are then dipped in teekha pani (spicy water) and served on a small plate in chaat joints in Mumbai.



3. Dahi samosa chaat: This mouth-watering chaat or appetiser is made by crushing and arranging samosas on a single serving plate. Chole, beaten yoghurt, mint chutney and tamarind chutney are added on the samosa plate thereafter. Salt, red chilli powder, cumin powder, chaat masala, chopped green chillis, chopped coriander leaves, chopped onions and sev are sprinkled for taste.

4. Sev Puri: If you are a chaat lover, you cannot afford to miss a plate of delicious sev puri in Mumbai. It has its origin in Mumbai and is strongly associated with the city's street food. Papdis (crispy deep fried flat pooris), green beans, boiled potatoes, chopped onions, chopped green chillies, chopped coriander leaves, tamarind chutney and green chutney are combined to make this mouth-watering Mumbai chaat.



5. Chana Chaat: This healthy and delicious snack is commonly savoured as 'chaknas' with alcoholic beverages. A handful of boiled potatoes, salt, finely chopped tomatoes, onions, lemon juice and green chillies are added to boiled chana (black chickpeas) to make the dish. Cumin powder, chaat masala and red chilli powder are sprinkled on top for extra flavour. Chana Chaat is served on newspaper containers in Mumbai.



6. Dahi puri: This is yet another popular Mumbai street food that you cannot afford to miss. Round, crispy and fluffy puris are broken from the top and stuffed with mashed potatoes and chickpeas. A pinch of salt, chilli powder and spoons of green chutney and tamarind chutney are added on the puris. A good quantity of beaten yogurt is poured all over the puris and garnished with sev, moong daal and chopped coriander leaves. A plate of dahi puri typically consists of five to six puris. It is delicious and can satiate your hunger pangs during any time of the day.

7. Toast sev puri: This is one of the unique chaats you can have in Mumbai. Imagine how will it taste when bread is used as the main ingredient to make a plate of chaat. The dish is made by slathering butter all over a piece bread and adding a spoon of green chutney to it. Later, sev puris, boiled potatoes, onion slices, chutney and sev are added and another slice of buttered bread is placed on top. It is grilled to perfection and served hot. 8. Samosa Chole: This is a popular Mumbai street food where samosas are served with chole prepared in thick spicy gravy. 9. Ragda pattice: Also known as Chole Tikki, this is another popular fast food of Maharashtra and Gujarat. Ragda pattice involves less cooking and makes for a complete dish.
