Back when the only cakes available in Mumbai meant dry, crumby, pre-packed slices or standard flavours at five-star properties, Bunty Mahajan's kids and their friends were spoilt for choice.
For their birthdays, Surbhi, Rishi and Suchit would look forward to a special birthday cake that their Le Cordon Bleu-trained mother would whip up. Word got around, and until six years ago when she launched her brand, Mahajan had her oven-gloved hands filled with cake orders from friends and relatives.
Today, Mahajan (55) runs a professional baked goods company with a stall at Out Of The Blue and also markets frozen yoghurts through her company FYI (Powai and Juhu). Suchit (28) hopes his mother's company Deliciae's stall will highlight the convenience of their mini desserts.
"Red Velvet, Belgian Chocolate Cake, Blueberry Cheesecake and all our famous desserts are priced at R75 per 100 ml container, and our minimum order is six pieces, so it's perfect even for tea parties and small soirees."
Sponge of the season
Khar resident, Roshni Vatnani (23) who writes a food blog and conducts baking workshops and whose The Vanilla Bean Bakery also grew from home orders, will offer American cakes and cookies such as a Dark Chocolate Fudge Frosting Cake, Cream-Cheese Pound Cake and Devil's Food Cake Cookies. The highlight will be Salted Vanilla Bean Caramel Sauce.
Sonali Gonsalves (25) of Sonali's Cupcakes and Cakes will showcase her range of interestingly flavoured cupcakes (Rs 40 onwards) emphasising her brand's USP - "edible prints - we can embellish cupcakes with any image." Sonal Mehta of Little Miss Cupcake, likewise, focuses on customised embellishments; her tool: Sugarcraft.
Vegan variety
Pedder Road resident and former banker Yashita Suchde (32) will endorse health with vegan and whole-wheat cupcakes (R50-R70) at her stall Xocolat. Her line-up includes Dark Cocoa, Almond, Coconut and Hazelnut Flavoured Truffles (Rs 50 for 6, Rs 290 for 12). She custom-makes these in the flavours of choice with 48 hours' notice.
At The Baking Tray stall, Santa Cruz resident Rebecca Vaz will, likewise showcase eggless desserts, as well as her famous cakes. You might get a sugar high with delicious Strawberry Drizzle Cake (sponge with strawberry jelly centre), Orange and Chocolate Marble Cake and Peach Upside-Down Cake (Rs 120 per slice) or bite into the savoury Bandra Slider (Rs 70), which Vaz describes as, "quintessential Bandra cutlets smeared with homemade mayo and mustard, in a bun. It's made with beef, but we're doing it with chicken."
Savoury surprises
Life Ki Recipe, Versova-based Amrita Rana's stall offers sweet, salty and smoky Bacon Jam (Rs 300/300 gm), that is stuffed into mushrooms and chicken. Also popular is her onion marmalade (Rs 150/300 gm) - a combination of caramelised onions, balsamic vinegar, brown sugar and rosemary. u00a0Amateur cook Mahek Shringhey's stall will hold almost as many surprises for her as it will for visitors.
The 22-year-old Juhu resident who teamed up with Lokhandwala girl Tansa Tripathi for this experience hasn't decided on her menu. "Quiches, Chocolate Rum Cake and ummm⦠it's not going to be about health or weight-loss. I love food and believe in having a Happy Belly," she giggles, adding that she's christened her stall as Happy Belly as well. A visit this Sunday to the big bake sale might guarantee just that.
On June 16, from 4 pm to 9 pm
