The Peking House
Food: Good
Service: Quick
Ambiance: NA
The Peking House has replaced The Curry House (now moved to Seven Bungalows from JP Road) at Versova. This takeaway Chinese joint is a great combination of economically priced, tasty food and prompt service. Both are obviously owned by the same management.
Chicken Spring Roll
We placed our order and had it well under 35 minutes which is excellent timing. The person taking our order was effusive, as was the delivery boy (a trait shared by The Curry House). The food was delivered hot and steaming in Tupperware containers, and most importantly, retained the delicious flavours and smells associated with Chinese cuisine.
The Chicken Spring Roll (Rs 160) was very flavourful. The fillings inside were generous, and the vegetables, sprouts and corn complemented the chicken. Great as a snack or an appetiser. The only contention was that they were long pieces as opposed to the classic smaller cut spring rolls. The accompanying Schezuan sauce went beautifully with it. Crisp to the light bite, it had a heady, tangy flavour to it.
The Burnt Garlic Chicken (Rs 230) looked pretty but its flavours and the crispy garlic bits were muted. While the curry was a good mix of garlic, ginger and chilli, this chicken was not spicy. Perhaps, a tad more chilli might have given it more bite because the chicken felt a wee bit bland. Not numbingly so, though. Of course, one can always add a few more chillies at the end if you wish to turn the zing into a zap.
The Chicken Fried Rice (Rs 160) was standard fare and nothing much to rave about. Soy sauce, sweet chilli sauce and oyster sauce combinations might have added some innovation. But if you like your chicken fried rice, like the kinds that is tossed up by your next-door Chinese hole-in-the-wall, you won't mind this one.
