In 2004, Sanjay Raut was elected to the Rajya Sabha as a member of the parliament representing Maharashtra. He was once again re-elected as a member of the upper house in 2010 and 2016 thereby serving his 2nd and 3rd term respectively

Besides being a Rajya Sabha member, Sanjay Raut also held the position of being a Member of the Committee on Home Affairs Member, Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Civil Aviation from October 2005 to May 2009. He was also a member of Committee on Food, Consumer Affairs, and Public Distribution Member, Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Power in 2010
