Last week, Mumbai-based stand-up comedian and musician, Aadar Malik qualified among 100 funny people around the world for the Funniest Person in the World contest conducted by laughfactory.com, a chain of comedy clubs in the United States. Though he failed to make it to the next round where only 20 were shortlisted, this recognition has put the comedian on a larger map.

Excerpts from an interview:

After the run in the contest, how do you see yourself charting an international career?
We just sent in a video. It was simply a first step. The same video is getting the attention of short film festivals and pushes us to create content that has a universal appeal.

Do you perform different jokes for Indian and foreign audiences?
You have to be aware of the fact that you are performing for an English-speaking audience and topics that they relate to are different. You must improvise to suit the audience. That's something we do in India too. A Delhi audience is different from a Bombay one. Certain things always need to be tweaked.

What kind of response do Indian stand-upâu00c2u0080u00c2u0088comics get in the US?
I personally have enjoyed performing outside India so far. In America, especially, they are tuned to "listen" to a comedian. You can set up a more complicated premise without the fear of losing them. It gives you a lot of room to experiment as a comic.
