"It's a labour of love," says Tom Alter as he chats with us on the phone from Goa. The 66-year-old actor is embarking on a marathon of performances, where over 17 continuous days, he will bring to life a gamut of historical figures - from the Mahabharata to the Mughals and the modern times - for the theatre festival, Jashn-e-Mazi: The Play of History.

Starting March 17, the festival will open with a blend of music, poetry and drama. The following days will see a play based on Karna Kunti Samvad written by Rabindranath Tagore, while The Last Annals of Alamgir by Ranjit Hoskote about Emperor Aurangzeb in his twilight years will also be dramatised. Known for his fluent Urdu, Alter will pay tribute to Urdu literary greats through poetic plays.

Other noted artistes joining Alter include Mallika Sarabhai and Sudhir Pandey. "It's a dream project, and we are doing it without sponsors," shares Alter. The festival isn't the only event on the actor's calendar. Tomorrow, he will present a scrapbook of his career through poetry, theatre and clippings of his films.
