Omkar Dhumal and Nakash Aziz
Here's a gig for those who avoid going to one if the tickets are meant only for entry, since buying a pass for this one is going to benefit stray animals in the city. Organised by In Defense of Animals (IDA), the proceeds will go towards a shelter in Deonar where people look after sick and injured strays, apart from carrying out a birth control drive. "We have about 400 handicapped dogs. The concert has been sponsored by friends and family. We figured that organising a gig would get people to shell out money. Besides, we have [actor] Akshaye Khanna as the chief guest, since he looks after stray animals and has adopted indie breeds. He will help us spread the message of being kind to them," says Dr Sharmila Karve, organiser and founder, IDA.
Plus, the line-up of the gig is quite unique too. Omkar Dhumal (woodwinds and music producer), who has curated the list, will play the shehnai as part of a jazz ensemble that includes Roland Fernandes (guitars), Among Jamir (bass), Rahul Tiwari (keys), Vaibhav Wavikar (drums), Umesh Warbhuvan (percussions) and Finix Ramdas (violin). They will play punk, jazz and neo-classical originals along with some Trilok Gurtu covers.
"We'll have the shehnai coming in with the clarinet and saxophone, which is exciting. We've kept the Indian essence of the music, but used it in a western set-up. Think of it as Indians speaking in English. In Mumbai, the word 'fusion' in particular only pertains to a rhythmic fusion, but we've focused on the melodies. So, instead of lot of mathematical combinations, we have focused on the calming effect of melody, which connects with people," says Dhumal, who will also play the Irish flute. There's vocalist Anjali Joshi from Uttarakhand, who will be singing Kumaoni folk songs with the ensemble. Bollywood singer Nakash Aziz will perform a few of his original songs, too.
