Catch stand-up comic Sahil Shah shares his take on modern love, its pros and pitfalls at a dating-themed show

"I don't usually use pick-up lines on a dating app, but a cool one would be this: âHey, are you a peacock? Because when I see you, I want mor,'" says stand-up comedian Sahil Shah, whose show tonight, titled Tinder x Social, will touch upon relationships, online dating, and why WhatsApp has made us so insecure when it comes to talking to the people we're interested in.
Shah is one of the founding members of comedy outfit East India Comedy (EIC). Since starting out, he has performed at over 600 shows, including overseas gigs in New York, London, Dubai and Singapore.
The 26-year-old shares that he enjoys using dating apps, as they provide him with plenty of fodder for his shows. "I've come across profiles of women who are married. Do you know how I knew? They had their wedding photos as their display pictures," he laughs, and adds, "I also have fun messing around with people. Once, there was a girl whose bio read, âIf you say Hi. Hello. Wassup, I will unmatch you.' I matched with her. Naturally, I sent her a âHi. Hello. Wassup.' Naturally, she unmatched me."
However, the comedian adds that he doesn't always fool around, and that all the swiping does in fact result in dates.
Unfortunately for him, the experience is not always pleasant. "I went on this date once where the person I was with refused to talk, refused to eat anything and even refused to split the bill," he recalls.
Shah is currently single, having recently gotten out of a relationship. "Being single is tougher, because you have to put in a lot more effort into your appearance. When you're in a relationship, you can look your ugliest and don't have to care about impressing the other person on a daily basis," he says.
He adds, however, that being in a relationship is fun if you're with someone amazing. "Unless, like me, you find yourself on the single side again. Then, well, it's back to saying 'Hi. Hello. Wassup'."
