the guide invited Appupen, creator of the Halahala graphic novel series, to share sketches that took shape during his work projects to scenic Thanedar in Himachal Pradesh. We present a selection
I set off to my friend Condy's orchard in the village of Thanedar, about four hours from Shimla, armed with my music, 130 sheets of A3 drawing paper and some basic drawing material. It is a great place to work, and I've returned occasionally, with new projects that need the mountain air.
During my second visit in 2006, I started drawing out graphic stories that later became Moonward, which was my first book. Ever since, it's a sort of ritual to start work on a new story, either in the mountains or on the beach.
- Appupen (George Mathen)
"Duggujubbad is the name of the orchard area. It took some time to get used to the name. The cedars mark the boundary along a stony path to the village, about 15 minutes up," recalls Appupen
It's a great place to sit
A meditation place by Satyanand Stokes, introducer of apples and many other things to the area, near his home and school
My favourite tree. I couldn't recognise this guy by the time I left, all full of leaves and apples
The path to the village, for supplies and workout. A leopard has been spotted here many times!
The view from the cottage that caught me first. Below flows the Sutlej, winding past and digging in. I heard they're going to dam that place, so next time it's probably going to be a lake
