DIY ideas to surprise her this Valentine's Day:
Symbolic accents
Wall art serves as an edgy medium through which individuals can immortalise their love, capturing the essence of their affection in a tangible and enduring form. Echoing the idea, Reshma Chhabria, a Mumbai-based designer and founder at HIIH, shares how couples can create personalised wall art which is symbolic to their intimate connection.
Customised map art: Design a map print of a place that holds significance for both of you, such as where you met, your first date, or where you got engaged. You can add personalised markers or captions to make it even more special.
Graphic print: Choose a meaningful quote from a favourite book, movie or song that speaks to your relationship. Design it in a beautiful font and add your name or initials for a personalised touch.
Comic strip: If you're feeling creative, design a custom comic strip that tells the story of your relationship, from how you met to your future dreams together. It's a fun and unique way to celebrate your love.
Celestial star map: Create a custom star map depicting the night sky on a significant date, such as your anniversary or the day you first met. Include a romantic message or caption to accompany the stars.
Illustrated portrait: Commission an artist or use an online design software to create an illustrated portrait of you and your partner. You can choose a style that reflects your personality, whether it's realistic, cartoonish or abstract. Play around and create caricatures to add a touch of humour.
Turn your outdoor space into a romantic heaven
These tips are perfect for places without electricity like patios, gardens or yards. Interior Designer founder and curator of Design Konstruct, Misbah Kapadia shares with us unique tips to create a romantic atmosphere outdoors:
Wreath: The easiest way to navigate this is to deck up your front door with a wreath covered in lush red roses, evoking feelings of passion and affection right from the moment your partner arrives. This simple yet elegant touch sets the tone for a memorable celebration of love.
Lights: When it comes to outdoor Valentine's Day decor, lighting takes centre stage in setting the mood and enhancing the ambiance of your surroundings. To create an enchanting atmosphere, create a 90's vapourwave aura in shades of pink and purple. This can be achieved with soft fairy lights and LED lights placed opposite to each other that give rise to contrasting shades.
The combination of hues will infuse your outdoor space with a whimsical charm, casting a warm and inviting glow that envelops you both.
Make your private cocoon: Consider setting up a cosy and intimate tent adorned with soft blankets, plush pillows and scented candles. This small tent provides a private sanctuary where you and your partner can snuggle up together under the stars, creating cherished memories in the comfort of your backyard, terrace or balcony.
Movies under the stars: Transform your outdoor space into a charming movie night haven by hanging a white sheet or projector screen against a wall or two tree branches. Set up a selection of comfy seating options such as blankets, bean bags or outdoor cushions and arrange them around the screen. Don't forget the caramel-glazed popcorns and your favourite romantic movies to enjoy together under the moonlit sky.
Sway together: To add a touch of fun and excitement to your outdoor Valentine's Day celebration, create a small disco floor area where you and your partner can dance the night away to the choicest music. String up colourful lights and disco balls to create a festive atmosphere to keep the dance floor alive.
Photo Booth: For a memorable keepsake of your Valentine's Day celebration, set up a photo booth corner complete with a backdrop, props and a camera or smartphone on a tripod. Encourage guests to strike poses and capture candid moments together, creating lasting memories that you can cherish for years to come.
Personal memorabilia
Chhabria suggests several DIY tips for men to surprise their girl with thoughtful and personalised gestures. One idea involves creating a âMemory Collage' using tickets, letters, photos and other mementos from significant moments in the relationship.
These items can be arranged on a corkboard, canvas or photo frame, serving as a visual reminder of their love story. Another suggestion is a âShadow Box Display,' where small items like concert tickets and love notes are arranged in a shadow box, adorned with decorative elements like ribbons or dried flowers.
For a more whimsical touch, Chhabria recommends a âMessage in a Bottle,' where love notes are written and placed inside a decorative bottle or jar, serving as a charming centrepiece. Couples can also create a âPersonalised Photo Garland' by printing out photos of memorable moments and hanging them along with handwritten notes. Another idea involves framing old love letters or correspondence as âVintage Love Letters' and displaying them as wall art in ornate or antique-style frames.
A âMap of Memories' can be crafted, highlighting significant locations in the relationship, while a 'Memory Jar' can be filled throughout the year with small mementos and notes to be emptied and reminisced about on Valentine's Day.
Face-off in candlelight
To create a special and intimate atmosphere for a candlelight dinner, Misbah suggests arranging the chairs at opposite ends of the table, ensuring minimal distance between the couple. Opt for a card table for a cosy setup.
Enhance the ambiance with a loose linen tablecloth, which adds an effortlessly elegant and sensual backdrop to the setting. Elevate the sophistication by folding the napkins and adorning them with a sprig of eucalyptus or rosemary and tie them with string and including special name cards with personalised messages.
For a touch of romance, choose simple yet elegant crockery that complements the overall aesthetic. Dim the lights to create a soft, intimate glow and play your favourite songs to set the mood. Adding a few candles of varying heights will further enhance the romantic atmosphere, casting flickering shadows and adding warmth to the space.
Infusing date night with scents and aromas
Scents and aromas can play a powerful role in creating a romantic atmosphere at home on Valentine's Day. Here are several ways you can use scents to enhance the mood:
Scented candles: Lighting scented candles can instantly transform the ambience of a room. Choose candles with romantic scents such as rose, jasmine, lavender or vanilla. Place them strategically around the room to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Essential oil diffuser: Use an essential oil diffuser to fill the air with romantic aromas. You can blend essential oils like ylang-ylang, sandalwood, bergamot or patchouli to create a custom scent that appeals to both you and your partner.
Fresh flowers: Do not underestimate the warm, lingering fragrance of tuberose. Not only does it add beauty to your home, but it also brings a natural fragrance that can enhance the romantic ambiance. Additionally, one can choose flowers with a strong, pleasant scent such as roses, lilies or jasmine and place them in vases throughout the room. You can also trace the initials of your names or a heart shaped stencil with petals.
Potpourri: Create your own potpourri using dried flowers, herbs and spices to awaken a soothing and pleasant fragrance. Place the potpourri in decorative bowls or sachets and scatter them around the room to release their fragrance slowly.
