Candidates curious about the JEE Main ranking process; often get confused about marks, percentile, and rank. But they are now at the right place where all their doubts will get cleared! The National Testing Agency (NTA) publishes JEE Main results in the form of percentile scores. The JEE Main percentile scores are not equal to the actual marks obtained by the candidates. Percentile scores are normalized marks of candidates.

As the JEE Main Exam is held in several shifts for days, the difficulty level of the questions varies in every shift; therefore, to remove any possible discrepancy, normalized marks are formulated. The raw marks obtained by any candidate is converted to percentile score to prepare the ranks.

JEE Main Marks vs Percentile Normalization Process

The Percentile score implies the percentage of candidates with a raw score equal to or below that specific percentile in JEE Main Examination. A percentile score is generally estimated on a scale of 0 to 100 for each session of the examinees.

The desirable percentile of JEE Main is 100. Therefore, the top scorer of each session will be successful in getting the 100 percentile. NTA compiles the raw scores of the candidates and normalizes the scores to prepare the percentile scores for each subject - Physics, Chemistry, Maths, and total.

The percentile scores are prepared up to 7 decimal places to avoid ties between candidates with identical percentile scores.

How to Calculate JEE Main Percentile Score?

JEE Main exam is usually held for 3-4 days with two shifts every day. In every shift, the difficulty level of questions may defer. For a particular shift, the questions can be hard or easier than the other shift. For the equal competition, all the candidates' obtained marks are converted into normalized marks.

The Percentile marks are the Normalized Score which is prepared to create the merit list for the exam. Raw marks become percentile scores using a specific formula used by NTA. Now, the formula for calculating JEE Main percentile is:

[(Number of candidates who appeared in the session with a raw mark equal to or less than the candidate) / (Total no. of candidates who appeared in the session)] x 100.
