Exclusive! Breaking the mould: The many shades of Ranbir Kapoor

Juggling between shooting schedules of three movies that saw him exhibit different physiques, Ranbir Kapoor has most often credited his trainer Kunal Gir for enabling him to brilliantly portray what is required of him. Tracing his journey with Kapoor, Gir recalls how he had to switch his diet to mould him from the 72-kilo Jagga Bagchi in Jagga Jasoos, to the 84-kilo Sanjay Dutt, in Sanju, in an exclusive chat with Mid-Day's Sonia Lulla. Not only with his acting, Ranbir is often hailed as the ‘Christian Bale’ of Indian cinema, thanks to the stunning physical transformations that he manages to pull off. Switching between Shamshera and Brahmastra, Kapoor has been kept on his toes, thankfully, he has Gir by his side who ensures the 40-year-old is in great shape to deal with all kinds of demands.

Gone are the days of a typical lover figure from Wake Up Sid and Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, this version of Kapoor seems unafraid of getting caught up in the thick of things. His astound athleticism coupled with his broad shoulders complementing a sleeker trunk is even more pleasing.

With a strong focus on athleticism over bulk, Ranbir was supposed to look and play the part of a fleet-footed raider in Shamsera.

With shooting schedules of Brahmastra and Shamshera being well-timed, Gir revealed that Kapoor needed to burn off the fat he had put on for Sanju to acquire a lean look for Brahmastra, while the physical shape that he needed for Shamhera sat somewhere in between.

So, does constant body transformation affect one’s health? Gir repudiates, but points out that understanding the fine balance between training and over-training is essential. He goes on to admit that compelling actors to consume eight meals a day is no mean feat. However, there are dietary tweaks that he suggests can make the process easier on the star.
