Fitness enthusiasts can now try a now form of aerial yoga in Mumbai, which is done of hammocks, aided by yoga expert Anshuka Parwani
Wellness
The only exercise we had done recently was to make a dash for this aerial yoga class, where we were miserably late. Little did we realise that it would stir our inner fitness streak.

A lithe Angelina Jolie swinging in Tomb Raider to a piano concerto was our first exposure to aerial fitness. In our heads we hoped this would give us a figure like the silver screen goddess.

The routine relies on serious stretches that might be difficult for a first-timer, but not boring at all. By the end of our session, we could feel every ignored muscle. Here are a few exercises we tried for Air Fit, with Anshuka Parwani.
The workout
>> The foundation level 1 class offers a glimpse of aerial yoga, aerial pilates and aerial fitness. The class begins with mobility warm-up series, which includes the Mountain Pose, Chair Pose, Leg Extensions and getting on and off the hammock. It also engages one's core while warming up the broader muscles of the back, cervical spine, shoulders, quads and hamstrings. This is followed by abdominal exercises.
>> The fun begins with the zero gravity inversions that focus on spinal decompression. While you are upside down it applies reverse traction and hydrates the vertebral discs of the spinal column, which in turn makes you taller. "With the weight of the body partially or fully supported along with the help of gravity, you can explore and create space in your bodies as intended in traditional Yoga practice. Without the compression of the joints and spine you can achieve proper posture and alignment through relaxation rather than effort, therefore finding a more balanced and unencumbered expression of each pose," says Parwani. Letting go of fears, building trust and staying upside down is also one of the biggest benefits with the Air Fit routine.
>> This is followed by few forward bends, where different postures help strengthen and tone one's body. Post two more sections; the session ends with a levitating shavasana - guided meditation and incense for relaxation. Parwani tells us that as one advances, she adds flips and tricks, and progressions are made according to one's capability.
