As the festival of Janmashtami approaches, the streets of Mumbai are about to witness vibrant celebrations of Dahi Handi. However, with this tradition comes the risk of injuries. There is an increased likelihood of orthopedic and traumatic brain injuries being experienced by Govindas while forming human pyramids, health experts in Mumbai have warned.
They emphasise the necessity of wearing protective equipment like helmets, knee and elbow pads, wrist supports and safety harnesses and incorporating stretching and strength training exercises to reduce the risk of these significant injuries that can make one bedridden, cause life-long disabilities or even lead to loss of life.
Each year, numerous Govindas and participants face possibilities of fractures and traumatic brain injuries, indicating the importance of implementing safety measures. In 2023, Mumbai reported almost 200 injuries related to Dahi Handi celebrations. The constant pressure of performing well compared to other teams can lead to participants taking unnecessary risks for the sake of victory.
Dr Alok Pande, Orthopedic Surgeon, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Mumbai informs, "The festive spirit of Dahi Handi comes with significant risks of orthopedic injuries, especially fractures, among the Govindas. Dahi Handi involves forming human pyramids and effortlessly reaching the peak to break the clay pots. This may elevate the likelihood of an ankle fracture, foot twist, shoulder joint dislocation or pelvic fracture which could result in internal bleeding and tendinitis followed by sprains and strains."

He further adds, "Accidental falls or mishaps can result in long-term injuries affecting the wrist, ankle, elbow, hip, knee and hand, thereby impacting mobility. While attempting to break the handi, Govindas often try to use their wrist forcefully which can lead to inflammation, intense pain, deformity and even bleeding if the pot is particularly heavy or bigger."
Dr Girish Soni, Neurologist, Lilavati Hospital, Mumbai, explains how injuries during Dahi Handi can affect brain health.
He says, "Dahi Handi can pose dangers of several injuries including traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). Falling from heights and colliding with heavy objects like metal poles or hard surfaces while attempting to build a human pyramid can increase the risk of TBIs."
"These sudden trauma or injuries to your head can lead to complications like cognitive impairment, loss of coordination, weakness, paralysis, sensory problems, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), degenerative brain diseases, seizures, migraine, blood clots, nerve damage and even lifelong disability. These severe complications can negatively impact the injured person's quality of life. They may even require ongoing treatments and rehabilitation therapies for the rest of their lives. This can increase their dependency on others to complete even basic tasks like eating, walking, or using the restroom," he further explains.
To mitigate these risk factors, experts advise Govindas to focus on their safety and well-being while enjoying the festive atmosphere.
They suggest the following measures.
