What started as an experiment became a rage among Chaitali Menda's friends. The 33-year-old jewellery designer was on a break from her regular work and on a whim decided to embellish her shawl with a jewel as a classy add-on that could jazz up whatever one is wearing. After receiving a great response from her friends and family, Menda decided to launch the Stole-N-Goods line under her brand Jewel Thief in May 2011.u00a0

"Each design is handmade and unique. We rarely repeat designs and source all the materials from various markets," said Menda. A variety of beads, brooches, semi-precious stones and even necklaces are sourced from Korea and modified to decorate the stoles.

She admits to opting for brass most often but experimenting with different fabrics based on the season. "During the summer, I was predominantly working on chiffon and linen while right now I might work with lycra and pashmina," she adds. The appeal of Stole-N-Goods lies in the fact that they are multi-purpose (brooch/ necklace and shawl rolled in one) and very practical to use. "We make the embellished shawls and stoles in vibrant colours as well as in more sober colours such as white, black, beige and brown which can be worn with most outfits, ethnic or western," explains Menda. Menda's future plans are to expand her business to the US and Canada as well.
