Why go to bed with drab blue stripes in cotton, or rest your beer mug on a dowdy leather coaster, when vibrant Pop Art has infiltrated Mumbai stores?
The guy who made mass production, artistic
Andy Warhol (1928-1987) was a key figure in the Pop Art movement, and went on to become one of most defining figures of popular culture. Warhol's first solo Pop exhibit was held at Eleanor Ward's Stable Gallery in New York in 1962, featuring iconic American products including 100 Soup Cans, 100 Coke Bottles and 100 Dollar Bills, and paintings of celebrities Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor. He switched to silkscreen prints which he
produced serially,
seeking not only to make art of mass-produced items but to mass produce the art itself.
Andy Warhol was fascinated with morbid concepts. After Marilyn Monroe committed suicide in August 1962, Warhol used this image for screen printing.
What is Pop Art?
It's a visual art movement that emerged in the mid-1950s in UK and US, and challenged tradition by asserting that an artist's use of the mass-produced visual commodities of popular culture, is contiguous with the perspective of Fine Art, since Pop removes the material from its context. It used advertising, comic books and mundane cultural objects, commercial music
and cinema.
