Travel light. The most enduring image I have of this philosophy is the scene where Carl Fredricksen, an ex-balloon vendor and a widower, in Pixar's 2009 computer-animated film, Up, pushes all the heavy furniture out of his floating house, so that he can rid himself of baggage.

That scene is one of the reasons Up is among my favourite films, serving as a constant reminder that I could do with so much less "stuff". Baggage - in all its forms - weighs us down. Literally. It's why we tell ourselves that we can't take off to our own personal equivalent of Fredericksen's journey to Paradise Falls in South America.u00a0

If you're hoping for a more literal translation of the philosophy, as I was, you might consider donating old clothes to an organisation called Goonj. What they do is help channel old clothes to villages in the country, where it can be used as an economic resource.
