With touch as the central theme, city-based art gallery Project 88 will be screening four video installations from today. These videos are part of the opening exhibition -- Touched -- of the Artists' Film International, an annual show organised by Whitechapel Gallery, London, with its partnering galleries around
the world.
Minds to Loose, by Indian artist Neha Choksi is Project 88's entry for the show and will be screened along with three other works by Argentine artist Ana Gallardo, Norwegian artist Kaia Hugin and Serbian artist Katarina Zdjelar.
While Choksi's Minds to Loose is inspired from her performance piece Petting Zoo, to be accompanied by a series of eight collaged drawings based on the same performance, Zdjelar's My Lifetime -- Malaika (2012), on the other hand has captured Ghana's National Symphony Orchestra performing Malaika, originally a cheerful and empowering postcolonial composition that was famously performed by musicians including Miriam Makeba, Harry Belafonte, Boney M and several others. Gallardo's work Estela 1946/2011 (2012) delves into human touch, whereas Hugin's video Five Parts -- A Motholic Mobble -- Part 5 (2012) explores anxiety and madness associated with touch.
Each of the four videos revolve around the semantic field of touch -- touching music, touching bodies, touching emotions and touching madness, each exploring human emotions like pleasure, anxiety and comedy in their own way.
