We went sampling food from Bengal and Asam, and came back disappointed. Rad on to know why
Theu00a0dark clouds were heavy with moisture. The sky looked like it would start shedding tears very soon. Just the kind of weather when a Bengali worth his or her salt would bring out that sketch pad or the kobitar khata (diary for writing poems). And then the clouds burst with all their might. Just the weather to have some khichri with omelette and begun bhaja (fried aubergines).
This was also the time when a Bengali pines for Bengali cuisine. Little wonder then that the Bongs in the team decided to head straight to India Grill which was hosting a Bengali and Assamese food promotion as part of its Flavours of India promotion.u00a0u00a0u00a0
We sat down to the pitter-patter of rains, excited at the thought of luchis (puris), kobirajis, chops and fries etc being served. However, the anticipation soon proved ill-founded as various kebabs were served as starters. There were Seekh kebabs, Chicken hariyali tikkas, Aloo tikkis and more. Though they were quite delicious, we couldn't hide the disappointment.
Main course was served soon and there was all things Bengali the thin, long-grained rice, Chholar dal with coconut, Aloo posto (potatoes cooked with poppy seeds), Fish curry and Kosha mangsho (lamb curry). And then there was an Assamese chicken preparation.
While the food was nothing great, we though the hotel should have done more research rather than come up with regular dishes. The preparations too, were not really very authentic and one could actually feel the poppy seeds in the Aloo posto (it is supposed to be a smooth paste). The Chholar dal, though, was good. The fish curry was quite ordinary and bland and tasted as if the fish was cooked separately from the gravy ufffd thus missing out on the flavour.
The meal ended with a dessert platter that consisted Mishti doi, Khirkodombou00a0 (which was being served as Rosogolla, again showing the lack of homework), Lobongolotika (a fried sweetmeat) and fresh fruits. Could have been lots better.
