The new Aundh joint Fishtro has some delicious options that may soon popularise the concept of 'fast food fish' in Pune

Walk in and you will notice that Fishtro looks almost like a replica of the famous fast food joint, next door. Yet, these guys are an unusual bunch. In a land where fish is eaten with caution outside the home, Fishtro brings the concept of fish as a fast food to the city. We found exactly what we expected on the menu: fish in fried and grilled options. Apart from the traditional British Fish and Chips (also available in Continental and Indian Masala options), they have burgers, wraps and salads.

Fishtro knows how to fry its fish

We began with what seemed to be a slightly offbeat option, Cheese Fish and Chips (Rs 175). It came in a box complete with fries, a small but tangy salad and a mayo dip that perfectly complemented the dish. The single long piece of fish was batter-fried and tempered with paprika and herbs. We couldn't really taste much cheese, though the stringy consistency led us to believe that it must have been mozzarella.

Next, we tried the Pop Shrimps (Rs 55). The quantity may not be the most generous we've had, but we understand that shrimp is expensive. Deep-fried in a spicy masala batter, the shrimp tasted great. These could make a nice snack or a tasty side dish to any meal.

We then sampled a popular dish, done in an Indian version. The Fish Fingers (Rs 75) in an Indian batter took us by surprise. The coating wasn't the typical Tandoori-masala, but a perfectly smooth spice blend. The great taste of the fish may be well attributed to the fact that all the fish is imported from Vietnam because of their high standards. Care is taken to ensure that the fish is frozen in the right way to retain its freshness.

By now, we had a little too much fish on our palate, so we decided to clear it with a Chocolate Brownie (Rs 45). Again, this surpassed our expectations. It was warm, almost gooey, and studded with roasted walnuts. Delicious!

Fishtro has almost everything going for it. With a few more outlets, it may soon become one of the popular fast food joints of Pune.
