Performing arts often play catalyst in spreading awareness about important issues. In another such scenario, theatre group Swatantrata will be enacting a mime street play in Lavasa to steer focus towards the social issue of female foeticide.
A mime performance
"Even though a lot of awareness has been spread about this serious cause, female foeticide is still prevalent in our society. Unfortunately, girls have been killed even in the urban parts of the country. So, being a theatre group when we decided to perform an act on this cause, it was not easy to figure out a way as a lot has been shown and done already," says Dhanashri Heblikar, who has designed the performance.
She adds that they then came up with the idea of a mime performance, which would not only attract audiences but will also have a greater impact on people. "We haven't even named the play as we don't want people to get any idea before witnessing it. It's a 12-minute long performance and has a strong message in it," states Heblikar.
Heblikar reveals that the play needed a strong music base to portray the accurate emotions. Hence, the team worked carefully on the music after the rehearsals to get the coordination right.
A mime play requires a lot more from actors as well. To express without words is not a cakewalk, feels Abhijit Choudhary, who has directed the play.
"When you are doing a mime play, you need to have a very strong set of actors. We have undergone a two-week practice session to make an impact-worthy act. There are nine actors, who will be performing on the streets. We are confident about the subject and its portrayal," he adds.
The cast of the play includes Prakhar Singh, Mahadev Singh Lakhawat, Soham Gadkari, Sagar Joshi, Aniruddha Jadhav, Sneha Bhimte, Vandita Gandhi, Sukhvinder Kumar, Vaibhav dange, Rohit Nair, Zuber Sayyed, Aashish Tripathi, Atul Juware and Niraj Rai.
