Despite a storyline that makes little sense, Rock of Ages II is a hilarious, historical roller coaster that will need attention to master
Rock of Ages II starts with Atlas dropping the Earth and accidently splitting its continents, while God was working on the globe. Instead of picking up the Earth, Atlas picks up a boulder (the same from the first game). To avoid the wrath of God, Atlas takes the boulder and jumps into our planet. Why exactly he goes around fighting famous historical figures with boulders isn't explained. The game is nonetheless hilarious.
The gameplay falls in the tower defense genre and it is complex as much as it is interesting. You have to use limited amounts of gold to build defenses to ward off or at least slow down the opponent's boulders. There is a huge variety of defense units that get unlocked as you progress into the game.
And, once you defeat the enemy you get their boulder for your collection too. In the story mode, there is a cut-scene before each battle that supposedly explains why Atlas is fighting them, but it still makes letter sense. The in-game historical figures, peasants, soldiers and other units have all been torn right out of period paintings.
The stages are also beautifully crafted, and to keep things fair, your opponent has the same layout. They also remind us of Super Monkey Ball, where the maps don't have edges, which means your boulder can fall over. Sure, it will be reset, but when you are trying to gather speed and avoid obstacles, constantly falling over can be annoying.
Rock of Ages II also supports multiplayer, online and split screen. You can load a controller and take on a friend right in your living room or you can load up the online mode and battle out with three other players. Without multiplayer though the game can get a bit repetitive, which the developers need to address in the future.
The controls of the game are easy to understand on the PC, though controlling your boulder accurately takes time. Overall, it's a simple game, which needs great attention
to master.
