If you need a dose of laughter this Thursday, we suggest you head to Girgaum Chowpatty. No, we are not suggesting you play in the sand and have corn. Instead, head to Bhavans Hall next to Wilson College to watch Dahiben Dodhai. The play produced by Nimeh Shah, centres around the clever Dahiben and tells the story of how she teaches her children a few lessons in life.
Dahiben Dodhai is a story about a mother who teaches a few lessons of life to her children in a hilarious way
"The story revolves around the lives of Dahiben's family -- her son and a dominating daughter-in-law. The home is just like any other house until one day, when a letter arrives. The daughter-in-law reads the letter and begins to doubt that Dahiben is into an extra-marital relationship. She starts ignoring her and doubting her character. How Dahiben teaches a lesson to her children in a hilarious manner is something one must come to watch," says Shah, who has also written the play.
Shah says it took him one-and-a-half months to write the script. But bringing the script alive was a tougher task and was fraught with many challenges. "While writing a script we pen down our thoughts about how the story should flow. But while rehearsing the scenes we realise that a particular scene is not turning out well. I had to scrap many scenes and rewrite dialogues to add punch to the story," he says.
Dahiben Dodhai premiered in the US and was staged across 40 different cities earlier this year. "People love to stay connected to their roots. When this play was premiered in the US we got a good response from the Gujarati community," says Jaideep Shah who has directed the play.
Rupa Divetia who plays Dahiben is a well-known face on the small screen. She says, "An artist will always love being on stage as the response from the audience is prompt. Unlike serials, we don't have to wait for TRPs to judge our performances."
