Pune-based socialite Neeta Ranka Kothari started off making candles as a hobby but it soon turned into a profession. She is exhibiting her collection at Atelier, Aundh over ten days and around 300 candles will be on display.

Candles on display at the exhibition

"I started making candles six months back for my new house. A friend of mine picked up all the three pieces which encouraged me to take this up as a career," says Kothari. She soon put up images of the candles on a social networking site and started getting orders. "In October I will complete making 1,500 candles in just six months. I once received an order to make 300 candles in three days which I completed on time and after that there has been no looking back," she says.

On display will be square and round shaped candles with designs of crystal, pearls and Swarovski on them. "I like making crystal and pearl candles and the height of each candle is between two inches to four feet.
At the exhibition there will also be one feet candles," she states.

After working for three months with four helpers, Kothari has created around 300 pieces, which range from Rs 200 to Rs 4,000. She points out that it is the Rs 4,000 candles that sell the most, admitting that she is herself surprised by the demand for candles. "I am not to eager to open a store and prefer operating through social networking sites and via word of mouth. However, my work is available at a couple of high-end stores in Mumbai," she says.
