Game review: Assassin's Creed Chronicles Russia

While Assassin's Creed Chronicles India was a burst of colour, Russia is dark and well red. You play an assassin called Nikolai Orelov who is going to do one last job for the Assassin's Creed before retiring. The whole thing happens in revolutionary Russia in 1918, and Orelov is searching for a piece of Eden. Along the way you meet your much younger assassin called Anatasia Nikolaevna, who you will play from time to time. While Orelov is an experienced killer armed with a rifle, bayonet and modified grapple, Anastasia comes equipped with a rope blade and many of the cloaking techniques you see in the other games. It's a nice mix that gives the game something extra.

As with the last game, this one has terrible controls and the combinations required to do most moves is confusing, taking a long time to learn. The difficulty is also very high and you will end up playing the same level several times just to get by… even in easy level settings.

We also wonder how a rifle can be an assassin's weapon, especially in such close range. It seems odd no one noticed that a rifle has been shot, just a few minutes away.

We are not a fan of the colour scheme either, it seems too typical and besides we have seen it before in Sin City where it actually looked good. Not to mention the voice acting is terrible, I expected at least the conversations between the soldiers to be in Russian, not English with a Russian accent. The storyline, however, is the saving grace of the game. The last in the Chronicles series is not a great game but it is slightly better than the India leg.
