From an indie studio comes a game that marries the Wild West with the unexplored universe

Rebel Galaxy

Pop culture has always been fond of the marriage between the grit and fun of Western classics and the exploration of outer space. Often seen in TV Shows like Firefly and Cowboy Bebop, this has not been a mainstay in games. Up until now i.e.

Rebel Galaxy drops you in deep space, where you are not piloting a small craft but a massive destroyer, bristling with cannons all around. You can start off by playing the story mode involving a secret package left by your aunt, which takes you on a wild goose chase. While the story is a lot of fun, this is not why the game is such a sleeper hit.

You can set out and make your way through your very own adventure as a privateer, rogue, scavenger, champion, trader and anything in between. Carving your path, earning credits and powering up your destroyer. The universe around you is randomly generated, so you come across space junkyards to scavenge, hostile forces as well as space stations filled with aliens with weird gossip and hot tips on your next hunt, all to the tune of country music playing in the background. You never know what will happen next. Heck, if you still miss Firefly, you can just model yourself around Nathan Fillion's character, and continue the adventures.

The gameplay and control is very much like the ship controls in Assassin's Creed: Black Flag. You can speed up or slow down your destroyer in increments. Aiming will fire your broadside cannons at enemies. You can also control turrets and shields. It's just you and your destroyer in a universe open for you to explore.

Rebel Galaxy does not have the production values of big games. However, it does have good graphics, simple gameplay and great sound. Not to mention a rip roaring, yee-haw soundtrack. It's a game made with tonnes of heart and soul. Highly entertaining and recommended.
