Audi has taken wraps off the new generation of its entry-level luxury sedan, the A4. Prices start at Rs 38.10 lakh for the 'Premium Plus' variant and Rs 41.20 lakh for the top-end 'Technology' grade (both prices ex-showroom, Delhi/Maharashtra). Let's see what's in store.
The Looks
We wouldn't blame you if you thought that the new one was yet another facelift of the A4. But it is indeed a brand-new car, inside out. The evolutionary styling is deliberate, in order to keep the design in line with its siblings. The headlamps and the tail lamps get the LED treatment and, we've got to admit, they look super classy. Other bits, such as the hexagonal grille dipped in chrome, 17-inch alloy wheels, and the classic three-box proportions, lend the A4 some grace. It isn't outright beautiful, striking or aggressive, but carries the right amount of zing that the price tag demands.
The Cabin
Step inside the new A4 and you would instantly notice that the interiors too are in sync with that of its elder siblings. The layout is typically Audi, which means that you get a large central screen and a plethora of buttons on the centre console. Also, Audi tells us that India is among the few markets that get wood inlays on the dashboard. Audi's fabled Virtual Cockpit tech has made its way to the A4 as well. The traditional instrument cluster is replaced by a screen, which reads out everything, including navigation, music and vehicle information. Other goodies include electrically adjustable seats, dual-zone climate control and a sunroof.
The Drive
We have already sampled the new A4 in Bhubaneswar. Head over here for a detailed 'first impressions' report. Mechanical duties are carried out by a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine that develops 150PS of power and 250Nm of torque. ARAI certified fuel efficiency is rated at 17.84kmpl. The engine is mated to a seven-speed 'S-tronic' gearbox. There's no Quattro all-wheel-drive wizardry here and, for now, the A4 is available as a front-wheel-drive only.
Interestingly, the petrol engine is the only option right now. A diesel engine is on its way, but the timeline is unclear as of now.
The Rivals
The new A4 will go up against the BMW 3 Series, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the Jaguar XE. We will get them together and put them through a road test. Stay tuned!
