Porcelain and silver. Both spell luxury when moulded to perfection. But Mexican artist Emilia Castillo fuses both these materials together and forms pieces of art that work as home decor and are usable at the same time

Porcelain and silver. Both spell luxury when moulded to perfection. But Mexican artist Emilia Castillo fuses both these materials together and forms pieces of art that work as home decor and are usable at the same time.

Born in Taxco, Mexico, Castillo's work is inspired by the natural surroundings of her birthplace. Apart from silver filigree on porcelain, her pieces also make use of semi-precious stones such as onyx, turquoise and lapis lazuli.

It is this mix of elements that adds a burst of colour to her work. The colours of the stones work as an interesting contrast to shining silver.

I loved her range of silverware jars and trays with perched colourful birds made from a mix of metals and other natural materials. They spell luxury with an element of quirk.
