Inktober 2022: How a Punekar is making dishes inspired by the annual art challenge

After first trying Inktober in 2021 with food but being unable to complete it, Pune-based Pranav Joshi has taken on the task of making 31 dishes on  31 days of October based on the prompts provided by the annual art challenge started by American artist Jake Parker in 2009. While there are many people who illustrate food by taking inspiration from the concept to create their own prompts, Joshi uses the original prompts to make food and thus a storytelling technique to engage his audience

Starting it off with the prompt 'gargoyle', a Victorian Gothic architecture style, Pranav Joshi made a delicious Victoria Sandwich for October 1. Interestingly, the idea to do the Inktober challenge came to him in 2021 after he successfully made 25 dishes in one day for Onam. After that, there was no looking back for the 27-year-old, who tried it last year but wasn't consistent. This year, he intends to do it till the last day of the month. Photo Courtesy: Pranav Joshi

Joshi has made many interesting creations in the last 19 days that not only include Indian but also European dishes. Among them, for the Day 5 prompt 'flame', the Punekar made a creme brulee. Being a sucker for Microsoft Excel, the Punekar has made a detailed plan for all the dishes on a sheet. He follows the sheet but some times changes the dishes depending on the feasibility because some of them do not work out as planned. Photo Courtesy: Pranav Joshi

Inspired by the prompt 'bouquet' on Day 6, the creative professional made a Kaju Gulkand Laddoo that he not only uses in the sweet dish but also on top of it as a colourful decorative element. He starts every day by posting a story about the prompt and asking people what they would make based on it. Ever since he has started this practice, he receives as many as 150-200 messages every day, and even finds the time to reply to all of them. Photo Courtesy: Pranav Joshi

Along the way, Joshi has learned about many new dishes after interacting with users who come to his page called Floydian Cookery. Among other dishes, the Punekar made a Veg Kilikoodu for Day 9's prompt 'nest'. On the post, he shares that the dish is traditionally made in the Malabar region as a Ramadan snack in which they use quail eggs in a vermicelli nest. However, he makes it using paneer instead of quail and maggi noodles instead of vermicelli, to make the dish. While he uses video for storytelling, Joshi also shares a recipe and interesting facts because he is also an avid quizzer. Photo Courtesy: Pranav Joshi

With the Day 11 prompt as 'Eagle', the Pune-based creative professional made a classic American double cheeseburger, as the animal forms an important part of their culture. Ever since he started his page in May 2021, Joshi has garnered a lot of support and his follower count is currently over 8,900 people, whose active engagement is what he loves to engage with on a daily basis. For Day 12's 'forget', Joshi decided to revisit a hot chocolate recipe from his archives that he had made many years ago at 3 am. So, he decided to make his version of drink as a tribute to his first ever food video. Being so passionate about challenges, the creative professional has created his own cutting board that now features in his videos. Photo Courtesy: Pranav Joshi
