There aren't many podcasts out there quite like this one. Currently 36 episodes in, the 'On Wednesdays We Wear Black' podcast series is the ultimate culmination of all things alternative, hosted by radio presenter Sophie K, musician and presenter Alyx Holcombe, and metal journalist Yasmine Sumann. It's an unfiltered gaze at concepts like sex, rock and metal music, gender, racism and a whole lot more, wrapped in a 45-minute chatty segment.

The podcast was a welcome change in terms of genre and content. There's not much of a difference in the format of delivery, but hearing the three hosts talk about topics like mental health, gender and identity felt inclusive, which is the only way to put it. Through episodes like Gender 101, host Sumann opened up to listeners about their experiences with gender and sexuality, by taking questions from listeners. The episode, like many in the series, was raw and informational, like a safe space, which was ultimately the aim of the show.

This writer was particularly drawn to conversations surrounding music and the alternative scene as it brought back memories of iconic bands. Over the years, acts like Slipknot, Nirvana and Black Sabbath had taken a backseat in this writer's mind, to be replaced with newer genres and styles of music. But tuning into routine episodes like Scene News, that talk about updates in the metal and rock scene, rekindled the interest to fall in love with them all over again. There's no shame in being an emo kid, as this podcast makes abundantly clear. Hearing these new narratives from the scene was refreshing, and if you too are looking for new audio content that's funny, witty, informational and easy-to-follow, this one might definitely be worth a listen.
