These activities can not only help us take care of our mental well-being but also make us happy. If you have always wanted to learn a new skill or hone an existing one but never got to doing it, here's your chance to make the most of these virtual workshops. We list five online sessions to check out this weekend.

Terrarium making workshop

Have you always wanted to grow plants at home but worried about your ability to do so? The folks at Earthoholics are here to help you to take the first step by creating a beautiful terrarium. A terrarium is a sealable glass container containing soil and plants that can be opened for maintenance to access the plants inside. At this workshop, you will learn the basics of making the container, which plants to use and get to know about their water and light requirements.

Basic string art workshop

Put your creative hat on to try string art as a fun DIY project. String art, also referred to as pin-and-thread art, is an engaging art form that can be tried out not only by experienced craftspersons but also newcomers. It is basically weaving coloured string, wool, wire, or yarn between hammered nails to create geometric patterns. The materials required are wooden board (dimension - 6x6 inches), iron nails, a printout (of a heart shape), masking tape/cello tape, string thread, scissors and hammer.

The art of short storytelling

If you are an aspiring storyteller, this is where you ought to be. Sheena Khalid, a storyteller and a theatre person, will conduct this session. It is for anyone interested in the art of short storytelling. All you need is an idea for a story that you would want to work on. You will learn to work on structure, style and the basics of performance. Since this is also a fundraiser, the entire proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to Nazariya QFRG and Project Sunshine, both of which are working towards help those affected by the Covid-19 crisis.

Object Theatre

Running out of ideas to keep your kids engaged at home? Sign them upfor this workshop. The focus of this object theatre workshop is to motivate children to spend time looking, imagining and expressing themselves with objects around them. The session will begin with an object performance with the help of mobile phone chargers and then will delve into activities that encourage kids to use objects around them to form different characters. It will be conducted by artist Prerna Bagaria. The class is open to kids between five to 10 years.

Introduction to Found Poetry

Aspiring poets, take note. If you want to learn a different form of poetry, consider a workshop by Shloka Shankar, a freelance writer and poet. This class will introduce you to the concept of found poetry. It is a type of poetry created piecing together words, phrases, and sometimes whole passages from other sources and reframing them. For this workshop, you will require newspapers/magazines/old books/text books/e-books, black marker, a photo editing app, paints, crayons, bookshelf access, scissors and glue to get you started.
