Celebrated across the country, Holi is a beloved festival famous for its revelry. While customs and traditions might differ among households, many people engage in playing with colours. Owing to a wide range of colours available on the market, we cannot be entirely sure of them being organic, or predict the impact they can have on our skin, hair, and nails. "While some resort to oiling their body, and hair there isn't a recommended routine to prepare for Holi. Whether it is dry or wet, smearing colours may end up damaging your skin and hair. "Amidst the revelry, it's crucial to prioritise your well-being," says Dr. Rashmi Shetty, cosmetic dermatologist, Ra Aesthetics and Dermatology. Below, the expert shares easy to follow precautionary and post-care tips to ensure you celebrate a carefree Holi.
Pre-care for skin
1. If you have dry, sensitive, or acne-prone skin, focus on protective measures like moisturising and repairing the skin barrier with suitable products. Indulge in a lot of moisturisers, night repair and nourishing creams.
2. Consult a dermatologist, in case of an acne infection, to acquire potential doses of required anti-inflammatory supplements or medication to ensure a hassle-free and enjoyable Holi experience.
Beauty runs skin deep, so does skincare. Remember, it is not simply what you apply on your skin, but also what you consume. Consider increasing intake of the following:
1. Start a week before by incorporating antioxidant and anti-inflammatory supplements like Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and Xanthin into your routine. A few other ingredients you look at in combinations are milk thistle, tulsi, ginger, piperine, curcumin, resveratrol, etc.

2. Boost your intake of intensely coloured foods, night vegetables, nuts, and seeds while reducing dairy and sweets to internally fortify against oxidative stress and inflammation.
3. Hydrate your body abundantly to counteract dehydration caused by sun exposure and alcohol consumption on the day.
Additionally, it is advised to take the following precautions:
1. Avoid at-home bleaches, laser treatments and AHA-BHA peels at your dermatologists' at least a week to 10 days prior to Holi to preserve the skin barrier.
2. On the day of Holi, apply multiple layers of moisturiser and sunscreen to create a protective shield against colours. I would also recommend a sunscreen stick for repetitive application.
3. For the rest of the body that may be exposed, you could consider cocoa butter or petroleum jelly - Vaseline, Aquaphor - as they would aid in barrier protection.
4. Do not ignore the nape of your neck, as most times, in order to avoid the face, the next colourful part of the body is the neck. Combined with potential sweating on the day, it could be an irritant to your skin.

Post-care for skin
For colour removal:
1. Use oil-based emulsion soap to gently wash off colours. Refrain from scrubs or loofahs which are harsh methods of exfoliation to prevent skin irritation on the day of, a day prior and the day after Holi.
2. Ensure adequate protection with caps and hats while outdoors, especially for sensitive individuals.
3. If you experience severe itching or irritation from colours, seek immediate medical attention to avoid exacerbating skin issues.
Pre-care for hair
1. Apply ample coconut oil to a clean scalp and on your hair strands. This forms a protective barrier against harsh colours and prevents them from penetrating deep into your hair shafts.
2. Ensure to keep your hair tied up in a messy bun or braid to minimise exposure to colours. This reduces the chances of colours getting entangled in your hair and causing damage not only from them, but also from other environmental conditions.
3. Cover your hair with a hat or cap to shield it from direct exposure to colours and sunlight. This provides an extra layer of protection and prevents colours from sticking to your hair.
4. You may also consider a leave-in conditioner before you head out to play Holi. This helps in sealing the hair cuticles and prevents colour from seeping into the hair shafts. For frizzy, rough and curly hair types, you can indulge in deep conditioning treatments.

Post-care for hair
1. Ensure to immediately wash your hair. One hair wash will suffice, as multiple washes may lead to dry hair.
2. Rinse your hair thoroughly with lukewarm water to remove the colour particles. Avoid using hot water as it can strip off the natural oils.
3. Avoid using a harsh shampoo which contains sulphates. Massage the shampoo gently into your scalp and hair strands, focusing on areas where the colour is excess. Follow up with a hydrating conditioner to restore moisture and nourishment to your hair. This can be rinsed off with cold water.
4. Give your hair a break from heat styling tools such as blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons. Let your hair air dry naturally to prevent further damage.
Pre- care for your nails
1 Apply a protective coat of clear nail polish to create a barrier between your nails and the colours.
2. Trim and file your nails to prevent breakage.
3. You may also consider gloves to shield your nails from direct contact with the colours.
Post-care for your nails
1. After playing Holi, soak your nails in warm, soapy water to eliminate any remaining colour pigments.
2. Avoid any nail polish application to allow your nails some time to breathe and recover from any potential damage caused by Holi colours.
By following these guidelines, you can enjoy Holi to the fullest while safeguarding your skin, hair, nails and overall well-being. Remember, preparation and precaution are key to a joyful and memorable celebration.
