The film, an adaptation of a novel by Dharamvir Bharti published in 1952 by the same name, is mostly in a flashback format. A raconteur, a young writer Manek Mulla tells the story of three different women to a keenly interested group of friends who judge and even cry as the stories progress, in a bare, sleepy bachelor room, perhaps what was called a mess.
These stories of the poor villager, the intellectual, and the middle-class wife unfold in flashback and attack the Devdas syndrome, while laying bare the harshness of society. In doing so, however, the narrative never loses its engaging pitch or pace. The guiding metaphor of the film that the lowest, slowest or the weakest (the seventh horse) determines the speed or progress of the whole is perhaps a much needed thought in our times.
