The Mumbai monsoons are known to wreak havoc on a number of things, from making our clothes mouldy to causing fungal infections. While many of us pay attention make sure to adopt ideal skin and hair care routines, nail care is often overlooked even though the adverse impact of monsoon is quite real and evident.
Mid-day reached out to Shilpa Thadani, an industry expert with over 12 years of experience in the field to understand the importance of nail care. She said, "Monsoon calls for special care of your nails to avoid infection and chipping of nails. It is important to remember that when you moisturise your skin every day, you do not forget your nails."
After running her Cuffe Parade nail salon for over a decade, Thadani took on the role of branch head at Bandra-based salon, Brushes and Strokes. Thadani lists nine essential monsoon nail care tips for you to follow.
Keep nails dry
Monsoon brings with it an over exposure to water. It is important to keep our hands and feet dry to avoid fungal infections, as fungus tends to grow in places where moisture gets accumulated.

Manicure and pedicure
It is advisable to get manicures and pedicures done regularly during monsoons to keep nails clean and dirt-free from inside.
Regular moisturising
Wet nails are prone to breaking easily owing to lack of moisture, one must moisturise regularly after shower and at bedtime.
Prevent breakage
Apply petroleum jelly around the cuticles before a shower, this will strengthen the nails and avoid breakage.
Comfortable footwear
Opt for comfortable footwear that won't dampen your feet and keep them dry.
Hot water routine
Soak your feet in hot water with salt or mild shampoo for 10 minutes to kill all the bacteria and to soften the skin.
Wash with soap
Wash your nails with a gentle soap to get rid of toxins and to avoid any infection and fungus.
Strengthen nails
Protect your nails by putting a base coat or a nail strengthener to prevent them from weakening.
Apply oil
Do not over style your cuticles or attack the skin, be gentle and keep them healthy with cuticle oils, this can help strengthen your nails and prevent them from getting exposed to damage or brittleness.
