London: U2 band members recently offered their new album ‘Songs of Innocence,' which they took out after five years, for free to the 500 million users of Apple's iTunes.

The surprise announcement was made at a California event where Apple CEO Tim Cook unveiled the firm's latest iPhone6 and a new smartwatch and the band also performed there, the BBC reported.

U2 lead singer Bono described the release of the 11-track album as "kind of mindblowing" and mentioned that this was the most personal album they've written, furthermore, they could share it with half a billion people by just hitting send.

U2 have collaborated with Apple in the past, however, the terms of the deal for the iTunes release are not known.
