On World Read Aloud Day, read from your favourite short story, novella or classic at a public reading event on Carter Road

Arts and education company, The Pomegranate Workshop has tied up with LitWorld, a New York-based literacy initiative to participate in a global literacy movement called World Read Aloud Day, scheduled at Carter Road tomorrow. The second edition, (the first was in 2013) will include reading aloud, telling stories and conducting activities in English and Hindi.

Read, engage and enjoy
The group will read works by Indian and international writers and poets, from their wide collection which they often use in the programmes they conduct with city schools. You can choose from readings of assorted poetry by Mahmoud Darwish, Safdar Hashmi and Langston Hughes as well as stories by Mahashweta Devi, Satyajit Ray and short stories by Italo Calvino. The sessions will include the exploration of picture books. novellas, short stories, myths, fables, excerpts from novels and poetry.

The session for children will include activities centered around reading and literacy. They will be given a set of crayons and paper and can learn to illustrate as they listen to stories. "There will be something for every age group", shares Zahra Gabuji, head of content and programming, The Pomegranate Workshop "We will also have a paper quilt, where people can write about books that inspired them or pick quotes from them. This will give us an insight into the kind of books people are reading," she adds.

The World Read Aloud Day rallies over 1 million people across 82 countries through community events focused on stories, read-alouds and literacy. The Mumbai chapter is open to anyone above seven years (children need to be accompanied by at least one adult.)
