If there's a side of Mumbai that always leaves you a bit angry and at the same time inspired, it has to be Sadat Hasan Manto's imagery.
The writer's three heart-warming tales based in the red light areas of the island city, returns to the stage in the adaptation, Chalta Phirta Bambai. Written and directed by Abhinay Banker, the play weaves three emotional stories about three women from different ages, who are into prostitution, either innocently, forcefully or helplessly.
While Dus Rupaye looks at the innocence of early teens, Siraj is about a woman's fight for righteousness in her twenties, and the final story in the trio, Hataq, looks into the frustrated exploration of one's identity in late thirties.
The Hindi play is produced by Darpana Academy from Ahmedabad and is a must-attend for those who wish to get a broader understanding of Manto's works and the Mumbai of his era.
