A new networking group hopes to empower the LGBTQ community with a platform to hone their skills and find placements
On Wednesday evening, if you drop in at SamBar in Khar, you'll be privy to the launch of a growth network where the LGBTQ community can connect, share ideas, recruit, job-seek and learn new skills. Called 6 Degrees, it's the brainchild of activist Harish Iyer, marketing communication professional Praful Baweja and IIT-alumnus Sushil. "The idea is to make people understand how integral LGBTQ+ individuals are to society. We aim to harness and support these voices of India," shares Baweja.

One of the main aims of the network is skill-sharing. The team will hold regular workshops on varied subjects, from photography and cooking to résumé writing, screenwriting and app coding.

It will also hold monthly meet-ups. "We're in the process of forming an advisory board featuring professionals belonging to legal, medical and finance sectors, life coaches, filmmakers and fashionistas. They will counsel and mentor members as well as spot talent," he says, adding, "We have identified corporates who would benefit from diversity by employing LGBTQ+ individuals. We expect recruitment to happen at the meet-ups."
