What: While many dream to finish their education and leave India, some dream to breathe their last for the country. Amar Chitra Katha's latest title - a compilation - Param Vir Chakra, The Ultimate Honour, celebrates the 21 men who have been awarded this military decoration.


Captain Vikram Batra was posthumously awarded with Param Vir Chakra. Point 4675 from the Kargil War was renamed Capt Vikram Batra Hill.

How: The Param Vir Chakra is the highest decoration of valour for the armed forces and was established on January 26, 1950. So far, medals have been awarded to brave men who have been a part of the Indo-Pak War (1947-48), Congo Crisis (1960-65), Sino-Indian War (1962), Indo-Pak War (1965), Bangladesh Liberation War (1971), Siachen Conflict, Operation Pawan (1987) and the Kargil War (1999). The stories, illustrated in full colour, also offer a glimpse of the personal lives of these soldiers.

Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon fought in the Bangladesh Liberation War. His body was never found.
