PN Choyal's Dance of Joy
The late PN Choyal is known for his imaginative capturing of the ruins of Rajasthan infused with contemporary concerns. His favourite subjects were the forts and havelis (mansions) of his native Rajasthan. He has won awards including the prestigious National Award (Lalit Kala Akademi, 1998) and is a forerunner of an artistic tradition that includes his son, daughter-in-law and grandson.
An artwork by Shail Choyal
His son Shail Choyal was born in 1945 in Kota and studied painting at the Udaipur University, followed by a diploma from the Jaipur School of Art. He went on a 10-month study tour to London for studying graphics. A painter, printmaker and teacher, Shail is known for his miniature style through which he has carved a niche for himself in contemporary art.
The exhibited artworks will include PN Choyal's Dissolving Past series and the Women series, where he interpolates the trauma of hackneyed social values for Rajasthani women. Shail Choyal's artworks were acclaimed in the â70s and â80s for using certain elements that are inherent in Indian miniature paintings. He later combined a strong musical quality with evocative visual imagery and used fantasy as a metaphor.
