We have all suffered the loss of a beloved bag, dress, or a pair of shoes to the dampness of the Mumbai monsoon. Moisture can have an adverse impact on a variety of things in the household, including furniture and gadgets. "While monsoon brings relief from the scorching heat, it also brings a few problems - mostly moisture and humidity which can affect items such as shoes, bags, spices, etc.," says Pallavi Goel, Studio Director at Livspace.

The Mumbai-based expert believes in reinforcing the functional and aesthetic aspects of design. Below, she shares effective storage hacks to help you safeguard all your essentials.

Clothes

-Place small muslin bags with cloves, or naphthalene balls with your clothes shelves and drawers. This helps prevent clothes from getting damp and emitting a musty odour during monsoons.

Shoes

-Always make sure the shoes that are not in everyday use are wrapped in newspaper and then placed in cabinets during monsoons.

-Avoid keeping them in plastic bags, as this will trap moisture in the bag. On the other hand, newspapers absorb moisture and keep the footwear and handbags dry.

Kitchenware

-One can prevent spices and condiments from becoming moist or going stale by adding a little bit of rice to the container.

-All containers, whether plastic or glass, should always be airtight.

-Another effective solution is to place spices, dry fruits, etc. in the fridge.

-Add neem leaves to containers which you use to store grains. Neem leaves are highly absorbent and will ensure that the moisture doesn't get onto grains and pulses.

Wooden cabinets

-Dip a fabric in any non-fragrant oil and rub it onto wooden surfaces. This avoids the moisture from getting into the wood and also gives it a shined as well as polished look.

Gadgets

-Always use silica bags while storing gadgets in bags, drawers, etc. to prevent moisture.

Bags

-Similar to shoes, ensure all bags which are not being used are stored away wrapped in newspaper and not plastic.
