In the past years, Indian Idol has had its share of controversies. The singing reality show was criticised for the panel of judges which included Neha Kakkar and Himesh Reshammiya along with Vishal Dadlani. Now, as the new season is about to air on Sony Entertainment Television, the makers have brought in some changes. Shreya Ghoshal, who judged Indian Idol Junior with Vishal in 2013, will be a part of the singing reality show's 14th edition. Veteran singer Kumar Sanu will join the panel. Vishal has been retained.
Sony TV's Twitter handle shared Indian Idol 14's promo and called for participants. The caption read, "Naye zamane ki nayi awaazein dhoondne nikle hain humaare naye judges! #IndianIdol coming soon!" Sharing the promo on her Twitter page, Shreya wrote, "You all manifested this and it's happening. So happy to be back on #IndianIdol along with the amazing @VishalDadlani and the legendary #KumarSanu Can't wait to listen to the extraordinary talent of India to blow our minds!! Are you ready!"

The last two seasons of Indian Idol drew extreme flak from the audience who felt the judges and makers were encouraging participants with sob stories over real talents. Judges Himesh and Neha were slammed for overexaggerating praises for contestants. The 12th season of Indian Idol was on air for almost a year. The audience further criticised the past two seasons for promoting fake love angles between participants for TRP purposes. Lack of systematic eviction, excessive drama, and glamour failed to hit home. The judges were also accused of favouring a couple of contestants. Many alleged that Indian Idol was a scripted show.
Anu Malik, who was trapped in the MeToo case, was an important part of the show. However, he was asked to quit the 11th season mid-way due to an outrage on social media. Himesh Reshammiya was brought in as his replacement. Neha Kakkar, who was on the panel of judges, left the previous season mid-way to fulfill other work commitments.
Rishi Singh was the winner of Indian Idol 13 which went off-air in April this year. Deboshmita Roy was the first runner-up.
